​Two contrasting detailed examples of flood mitigation of drainage basins.

Task

Use the materials below to create TWO case studies on FLOOD MITIGATION. Each case study should include:

• An annotated location map giving the geographical context
• An outline of the nature of the flood hazard in the study area. This should include:
  • Frequency of floods
  • Impacts of previous floods (SEEP)
• Structural strategies planned or already in place
• Planning responses planned or already in place
• Evaluation of the success of flood mitigation strategies.

You should aim to include annotated images, diagrams, sketches to support your case studies.

​Use the resources above to create notes on the Three Gorges Dam as a flood management strategy. you should have sections on each of:

• Flooding on the Yangtse before the dam (e.g. 1998 - 3,000 died)
• The location of the dam (Sketch map)
• Facts and stats about the Dam
• Advantages of the Dam
• Disadvantages of the Dam
• Overall evaluation of the success/failure of the TGD project.

Debate/discussion

• How do we know the best way to manage a river basin to reduce the risk of floods? Connect this to the TOK Ways of Knowing. Which play a role in our decision making process? Explain and justify your response.
• What arguments can be made against large scale structural measures? Support these with evidence from your three case studies.
• What are the advantages of structural measures? Support these with evidence form your case studies.
• Why are planning measures so important? What are the advantages and disadvantages of these? Support with evidence.
• How do you predict climate change will affect flood risk in your chosen case studies? What response would you recommend and why?
